What happens when you digitally transform your business and improve your customer's experience before your competitors? Your customers move their business to you from your competitors. Your sales go up faster and your competitors sales go lower.
Chevron has recently been converting their gas stations to accepting wireless payments in the San Francisco Bay Area, including our local city. Customers can now pay for their gas using their smartphone wireless payment systems including: Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Android Pay.
Over the years we've been regular Shell station customers. Unfortunately, many gas pumps in our area looked like they were hacked or broken. It seems like management were trying to save money by not maintaining their pumps. I became less and less interested in putting my credit card into their pumps to pay. They also seem to have a lot of pump receipt printers broken, forcing me to go into their gas station stores and wait in line to pay for my gas. Note: In 2016, Shell announced that it was rolling out Chase Pay using QR-code technology (from JPMorgan Chase) to all of their stations in the USA. I haven't seen any in our area yet.
Going forward we are switching most of our business to Chevron. Bye Bye Shell...
Over the last year we continue to shift our business to companies that accept Apple Pay. Some of the benefits include:
- Better security
- We don't have to share our personal information
- Get much faster check-out when compared to the new USA retail chip technology
Overall, companies that invest in quickly improving their customer experience will outperform their competitors over time.
